Stone Memorials •

One thing I have realized recently is Inakadate has a lot of stone of stone memorials. Most people probably don't notice them, but really, it is quite surprising how many there are. There are lots of stone memorials in shrine grounds, but often you will find them simply sitting on the side of the road.

During my seven years in Japan I have lived in four places, Ise, Kyoto, Akita and Aomori. Of course Ise and Kyoto are both very famous old cities, but neither of these cities have as many stone memorials as Inakadate. They're everywhere.

During the next couple of months I am going to try to present a few of these stone tablets on this blog. I think they are an interesting look into the history of the village. Certainly it is better than reading a textbook or a history. Not only do they tell what happened, but they also tell what people feel is important enough memorialize in stone for history to read years in the future.

Being stone, memorials like this last a long long time, and kanji that were written a long time ago are difficult for me to read, but many of them I can read enough of to understand what they generally are about. I might not understand them all, but I do learn a little about Inakadate through looking at them.

This first one is simple. It is in the grounds of the shrine in the Maedayashiki neighborhood. It reads, 'Tokyo Rikishi, Ayatetsuzo' A rikishi is a sumo wrestler and I think a 'Tokyo Rikishi' is someone who was good enough to be able to go from Aomori fight in Tokyo. Asking around the village hall, it seems that Ayatetsuzo lived and fought in the about 100 years ago.

I wonder what other kinds of history I will be able to find looking at Inakadate's stone tablets?.

The Cyclamen Fair •

Last week was another big event in the Inakadate annual calendar. Last Saturday and Sunday was the Harvest Appreciation Festival and Cyclamen Fair. The parking lot around the village hall and community center was filled with tents each tent was contained a group of people offering some service or selling some product.

There was a little of everything, handicrafts, ready to eat food, fresh vegetables, blood pressure checks, eyeglasses salesmen, mochi, rubber boots, and winter coats. And then the main attraction of the day was the cyclamen sale. It wasn't too long ago that I didn't even know what a cyclamen was, but now I live in a village where this flower is raised and celebrated in an annual festival. They floor of the village gymnasium was filled with red, pink and violet cyclamens for this event. It was quite a sight to see.

I have participated in the festival as well, putting forth an International Exchange Corner with some simple displays and a quiz about the United States. Happily quite a few people have stopped by and taken the quiz and even more happily, many people seem to have known the answers. Many of the children that I teach at the elementary schools in particular have stopped by to say 'hello.'

Rusty Signs •

I don't know why, but I have a fascination with old things. I like new things too, but I really enjoy walking through a place and discovering old things. Because of this, antique stores and flea markets are like a children's toy store for me. Inakadate has lots of old things here and there throughout the village and I therefore often find something interesting to me.

One thing that seems to have survived is old signs. I have found several signs in the village that look like they have been up for 30 or 40 years. They are all rusted and bent and sometime hardly legible, but that gives them character. They have survived over the ages and give uniqueness to the area they are displayed.

For me, the more rusted a sign is, the better. In the USA, I don't recall seeing many rusty signs. Here in Inakadate, they are not that rare. In the USA, rust is something you see on cars. That is because with no shaken system, people drive cars much longer. It is not uncommon to see 20 year old very rusty cars on the road in Minnesota. My father used to drive a car that he could only use in the summer because too much cold air would come in the rust holes in the floor.

Most people think these rusty signs are probably just garbage, but I think they are really cool.

A Quick Fall •

The fall colors in Inakadate didn't last too long. For a few days, they were quite grand, but then suddenly winter-like weather came. The rain fell and strong wind blew. And of course, with that the leaves quickly disappeared.

Here in Inakadate it was rain, but when the rain stopped and the clouds cleared, it was clear that it hadn't been rain everywhere. All the mountains surrounding Inakadate were covered with white. From here the ski slopes at the top of Owani Ski Resort were visible as well as big parts of a white Mt. Iwaki.

Of course, this was only the first of many snowfalls. From what I have heard and can see, I am sure Inakadate will be completely buried in snow in no time. But today was the first!

Beautiful Fall Colors •

It wouldn't be right to get through this season without a mention of the fall colors. My wife and I went for a drive over a month ago and saw lots of leaves just starting to change color at the top of Mt. Hakkoda. Since then we have been on several other trips and have noticed the color of the leaves gradually coming down the hills into
the flat land.

I think probably you could say that the peak was early last week in Inakadate. There are beautiful trees here and there, but one thing I can honestly say, however, fruit trees are justifiably not well known for their beautiful fall colors. Rather, the leaves of the apple trees and other fruit trees seem to just fall off rather than change color. (It also might seem that way because a lot of the apple leaves were stripped off in the last month or so to help the fruit ripen.)

But there are some beautiful fall colors to be seen in Inakadate and surrounding Aomori. Aomori, with famous sites like Shirakami Mountains, the Shimokita Penninsula and Mt. Hakkoda, is filled with nature and the fall colors are really spectacular. In Inakadate, the nature may not be that big, but in the many gardens surrounding people's homes, too you can see some intricately crafted colorful leaves and trees. It is really a beautiful season.

Happy Halloween •

I haven't updated in this blog for a while recently. That is mainly because it has been so busy around here. With many events in Inakadate recently, there has been lots of things to write about, but no time to write them down.

The first thing that that happened a while ago was Halloween. For about a month before Halloween, the kids at Inakadate's three nursery schools started preparing for Halloween. They made lots and lots of decorations; bats, spiders, skeletons, pumpkins and two kinds of ghosts. These they sent with me to decorate the village hall.

In addition they spent a while learning Halloween words like 'bat', 'ghost' or 'trick or treat' and making costumes. Some of the kids made their own costumes which looked really great and a lot of the kids wore the costumes their teacher provided. They were all really creative.

Then October 31, the big day came and all the nursery school students came to visit the village hall. We had put up all the decorations and it looked really great. In addition, we had prepared each section within the village hall with candy to give to the kids when they came by and said 'trick or treat'.

In addition several people at the village hall also dressed up. I was a scarecrow, complete with straw hanging out of my shirt and pants. We also had a samurai, a glamour queen and several animals. The day was a big success.

It was a fun day for all.
