Life in Inakadate・田舎館での暮らし

Summer is almost over and with it I expect most of the bugs will be dying for the season. But before that happens, I would like to share two things I discovered this summer. Like everyone, I don't like mosquitoes and other biting insects, but for the most part, if they leave me alone, I don't mind most bugs.
もうすぐ夏が終わりますが、夏の終わりとともに虫のほとんどが死んでいくでしょう。し かし、全部が死んでいなくなる前に、この夏僕が発見した２つのことを書きたいと思います。皆さんと同じように、僕は蚊など刺す虫が嫌いですが、一般に危害を加えられなければ、虫をあまり気にしない人間です。できるだけ、仲良く共存していきたいと思っています。

First of all, I have nothing to compare to, but it seems to me that there have been quite a few bugs in Inakadate this summer. One of the first things that I noticed was the spiders. Minnesota has lots of spiders too, but they are generally small and the webs they make are almost invisible. Inakadate spiders, on the other hand, seem huge and the webs they make are really strong and sticky. This photo is of a spider web that was nearby my apartment.

まず、他の年と比較できないのですが、今年の夏、田舎館ではかなりの虫が見られたような気がします。最初に気づいた虫はくもでした。ミネソタにもくもが多いですが、ほとんどが小さくて、そして、そのくもが作る糸はないに近いぐらい、柔らかくて弱い 物です。しかし、それに対して田舎館のくもは大きいです。そして、その大きいくもの糸は特に強くて、ねばねばしているという感じです。この写真はアパートの 近くに住んでいたくもです。

Another thing I have noticed about insects this summer is the interest and relationships people build with different bugs. Japanese children, mainly boys, seem to love beetles (a.k.a. kabutomushi). I asked the students at the nursery school to draw a picture of their families and nearly all the boys, right next their mothers and fathers, drew a picture of their kabutomushi. That's how close they are.
その他に気づいたことは、アメリカ人と日本人の間に、それぞれの虫に対する関心や虫との関係が違うということです。日本人の、特に男の子は、カブトムシが大好きなようです。保育所で「家族の絵を描いてください」と子供たちに頼んだら、男 の子のほとんどはお父さんとお母さんと並んで、カブトムシの絵も描きました。子供にとってカブトムシは家族の一員のような存在のようです。

Now I don't mind bugs and kabutomushi are just another bug. They are neat and interesting, but that's enough. I don't think I would ever keep one, or like many people seem to do, spend lots of money to buy one. The other day at a picnic, one landed on our sheet and started walking across toward me. Rather than pick it up or touch it I got out of the way and let it walk by. In this respect I think I am like most Americans; beetles are ugly and are near relatives of cockroaches.
僕は虫は気になりません。怖いとも思いません。僕にとってはカブトムシは虫の一種類というだけです。「かっこいい」と言われると、そうかもしれませんが、ただの虫です。僕がカブトムシを飼ったり、または大金を出して買う、ということは絶対にありえないです。 さらに言うと、この前のピクニックでは、カブトムシがシートにとまって、僕の方へ歩いてきました。しかし、拾ったり触ったりせずに、僕はそのカブトムシの歩 く道を避けて、通してあげました。こういうことは、僕は代表的なアメリカ人だと思います。だって、カブトムシってあの醜くいゴキブリの仲間ですから。


On the other hand, most Americans feel a close bond for caterpillars. Lots of American children will catch a caterpillar, put it in a glass jar, feed it leaves and wait for it to become a butterfly. In Minnesota there is an infestation that happens about every 15 years where billions of caterpillars attack the birch trees. Most Minnesotans think it is just a bother, but because of this, all the little children eventually learn to play with caterpillars.
その一方で、多くのアメリカ人は毛虫とちょっと親しい関係を持っていると思います。アメリカでは、毛虫をつかんで、ガラス・ビンに入れて、葉っぱを食べさせて、蝶になることをわくわくしながら待つ子供は少なくありません。ミネソタには10 年に一回ぐらい、白樺やポプラーの葉っぱを食べる毛虫が大発生します。大人にはただわずらわしいだけですが、この大発生で、子供たちは毛虫と遊ぶことに慣れていきます。


Japanese people seem to have a very different opinion toward caterpillars. I have heard many times from Japanese people that caterpillars will make you itch, but I have picked up thousands and never experienced it. Maybe it happens with one or two species, but it is not with all caterpillars.
日本人は毛虫に関しては、違う考え方を持っているようです。日本人に「毛虫を触ったら痒くなるから触らない方がいいよ」とよく言われますが、今までに何千匹の毛虫を拾った僕はその痒い経験をしたことがありません。１、２種類の毛虫は触ると痒くなるかもしれませんが、全部の毛虫がかゆみをおこすわけではありません。

The result however is that a whole nation fears the cute caterpillar and instead loves the ugly beetle.
その迷信があるせいで、日本全国でかわいい毛虫が嫌われた物になって、見苦しいカブトムシが好まれています。
