Life in Inakadate・田舎館での暮らし

Sunday was the Inakadate Inekari Taiken Tour, one of the village's biggest annual events. "Inekari" is the Japanese word for "cutting rice"; "Taiken" is the word for "experience." So this was the day to get out in a rice field with a pair of boots and a sickle and try your hand at harvesting rice. And nearly 800 people did just that.
この前の日曜日、村の大きいイベントの一つである稲刈り体験ツアーが行なわれました。「稲刈り」というのは稲を収穫することで、「体験」は自分の体で経験することです。ですから日曜日は長靴を履いて、鎌を持って、田んぼに出かけて、自分の手で米を採るチャンスでした。そして800 人以上が参加して、それをやりました。

At first I was working at the registration table. We were overwhelmed with welcoming people and passing out sickles and rice redemption tickets. The event itself started with an opening ceremony with several quick speeches and an explanation for those who needed it. Then it was out into the fields to cut the village's Tambo (Rice field) Art.
最初、僕は受付のテーブルで働いていました。大勢が来ていたので、皆を歓迎して、鎌や米の引換券を渡すことは大変でした。イベントそのものは開会式と稲刈りの説明から始まりました。そして、皆さんは役場の隣の田んぼアートに入って、刈り始めました。

We were doing it all by hand, but didn't cut much of the purple or yellow rice. It wasn't quite ripe and the village will need that for seeds for next year's new art. So everyone focused on the green colored Tsugaru Roman rice. It was amazing to see how everyone attacked the fields to cut it. Slowly they worked their way in from almost every direction.
全ては手で刈りましたが、田んぼの中の黄稲と紫稲を刈らないようにしました。それは、来年の田んぼアート用の種にするために、もう完熟にしなければならないからだそうです。ということで、皆が緑色の津軽ロマンというブランドの米を刈りました。800 人の皆さんが一気にその田んぼに入るのを見るのは大変素晴らしかったです。ゆっくりと、各方向から進んで、刈っていきました。

I wrote "slowly" in the previous paragraph, but when you were out there working next so some of the older people, they were not slow. Of course these days most rice is cut with a combine, or at the very least, with a binder. But it was immediately obvious to an observer like me who had actually cut rice this way in the past. They would cut, bind up, stack and move on with lightning speed. It was truly amazing.
前の段落では「ゆっくりと」と書きましたが、田んぼの中で、ちょっと年取った人の隣で働いている時は、ぜんぜん「ゆっくりと」という感じではなかったです。もちろん、この頃多くの稲はコンバイン、少なくてバインダー、を使って刈っ ています。しかし、僕でも、まじめに手で稲を刈った人と遊び程度で稲を刈った人を簡単に区別できました。まじめに稲をかっていた人は、とても上手で昔手で稲を刈っていたと思われます。この人たちはびっくりする速さで稲を刈って、束ねて、重ねて、次のに続けました。本当に見事でした。

I spent most of the morning working with the other foreigners who were visiting for the event. I can say with confidence that everyone had a good time. For those who wanted to cut, there was plenty of rice for everyone; for those who like to play in the mud, there was a whole field of that; for those who wanted to talk, Inakadate's rice cutters were very hospitable; and for those who were looking for a great "shutter chance", there were plenty of those as well.
僕はほとんど稲刈り体験に来てくれた外国人の人たちと一緒に働きました。自信を持って、皆が楽しんだとと言えます。頑張って刈りたい人には、山ほど稲がありました。泥遊びしたい人には、泥はたっぷりありました。おしゃべりしたい人 には、田舎館の皆さんも快く歓迎してくれました。そして、シャッターチャンスを探している人には、それもたくさんありました。僕のベスト・ショットをここ に載せてみました。

After cutting most of the Tsugaru Roman about 11:30, people cleaned up and then walked across the street to the gymnasium where there was a free lunch waiting for everyone. While eating we listened to some rather unexpected entertainment, a rock band doing heavy metal covers of Nirvana and Metalica.
津軽ロマンのほとんどを刈った11時半ごろに、皆が泥をおとして、道路を渡って、無料の昼ごはんが待っている体育館に行きました。そして食べながら、来る前に予想できなかったメタリカやナーバナの曲をカバーしているロックバンドの演奏を聞きました。”くだもの釣り”は大盛況で、みんな楽しそうでした。

There is no real "Tour" involved in the Inekari Taiken Tour, we only went across the street for lunch, but when combined with the Taue Taiken (Rice Planting Experience) Tour the village hosts every spring, the two make a nice pair. 稲刈り体験ツアーという名前ですが、ツアーはありません。昼を食べるため道路を渡っただけです。しかし、毎年春に村が開催する「田植え体験ツアー」と一緒にするとこの2つのイベントがいいコンビになります。来年の田植え体験ツアーは2006年5月28 日に予定していますので、その日を開けといて、また田舎館で会うことを計画しておいてください。
