Life in Inakadate・田舎館での暮らし

Anyone who has been to this part of Aomori knows that Inakadate and the surrounding communities are famous for producing apples. To tell the truth it's hard to believe I have written this blog for three months without mentioning apples. They're everywhere around here.
青森県のこの辺に来たことがある皆は、田舎館村とこの周りの地域が有名なりんご生産地であることは知っていると思います。実を言うと、このブログを３ヶ月近く書いて、りんごの話が登場しなかったことがびっくりする程りんごが多くあります。どこへ見ても、りんご畑です。

Comparatively speaking, like I mentioned previously, rice is the largest crop when measured by area under crop, but apples are much more profitable. According to statistics I have, there are 251 square hectares of orchards in Inakadate. In 2004, these orchards produced 4530 tons of apples. Compare that to 5430 tons for 898 square hectares for rice.
前に書きましたが、面積的にいうと米が田舎館の最も重要な生産物です。しかしりんごの方が利益があるようです。目の前の統計を見ると、2004年には田舎館にある 251ヘクタールのりんご畑はりんごの4530トンを作りました。それは898 ヘクタールの田んぼは5430トンの米を作ったことを対比すると、ヘクタール当りのりんごの生産量が明らかに多いです。

Then you probably would ask, why don't people grow less rice and more apples? I haven't been here for a whole year to watch the whole cycle, but from what I have seen, apples are a lot more work. If people were to plant all their land in apples, they couldn't manage the workload. Growing apples is a lot of hard work…here is what I have learned.
そう見ると、普通の人は、「じゃ、なんでりんごを増やして、米 を減らさないんですか」と聞くでしょう。一年間のりんごの生産サイクルを全て見ていませんが、僕が見た限り、その理由はりんごが米よりずっと手間がかかる からです。田舎館の農家が所有している田んぼの面積を全部りんごにしたら、自分たちだけで手に負えなくなるらしいです。りんごの生産は大変です。これから は僕が見て覚えたことです。

When I first got here people were busy putting bags on their apples (while still on the trees). This I understand is to stop the sunlight and keep the apples from ripening too quickly. But I also understand it isn't just one bag. People put two bags on to block out all the light and then eventually take off one bag to let some light through to start the ripening process.
最初にここに着いた頃、皆が一生懸命りんごに袋を掛けていまし た。これは光を止めて、りんごの熟すことを抑えるためだそうです。しかし、一つの袋だけではなく、袋を２つ掛けるのです。最初は２つを掛けて、光を全面的 に止める。そして、時期を見て１つの袋を剥いでゆっくりと熟させるらしいです。

Now with fall quickly closing in, it seems that people finally want their apples to ripen quickly. I can see that in three places. First all the bags on all the apples have been removed to let all light in. Second, farmers have spread reflective plastic sheets on the ground under all the apple trees. These are designed to reflect the light up so the bottom of the apple ripens as well as the top. Third, these days you see a lot of people out in the orchards pulling leaves off the trees near apples. At this stage the leaves aren't providing any needed nutrition and are only shading the apples from ripening more quickly. So everyone is out there pulling the leaves down.
秋の終わりが近づくと、今度はりんごを一気に熟させます。これ は３つの点で判断できます。まず、りんごを包んでいた袋が最近全部なくなっています。光をフルに浴びているようです。次に、農家たちはりんごの下の地面に 銀色のシーツを敷いています。これは光を反射させ、りんごの下の部分もきれいに赤くする為だそうです。そして、最後に僕が観察したことですが、近頃木の 葉っぱを取っている人が大活躍しています。太陽が弱くなった今では、葉っぱが栄養を作っていないし、りんごに当たる光を邪魔しているので、農家が葉取り作 業にかかっているらしいです。

This is of course only one small part of the whole apple growing season. Farmers will spend a big part of the winter pruning trees. There are probably many other jobs I can't even imagine now. A CIR in neighboring town has an interesting section in his blog (http://tyler-mitchell.blogspot.com/) about hand pollinating apple trees. Another thing I have noticed, some of the best tended grass lawns I have ever seen in Japan are under apple trees here.
ここに書かれたことは一年中続く りんごの仕事のほんの数ヶ月をまとめた物に過ぎません。農家の皆さんは冬の間に、木の枝を鋏む仕事をしますでしょう。そして春になったら、本格的なシーズ ンが始まります。今のところ僕が想像できない仕事もたくさんあるでしょう。隣町の国際交流員のブログhttp://tyler-mitchell.blogspot.com/) には、手でりんごの花に花粉をつける記事があります。それを見ることを楽しみにしています。もう一つ僕が気づいたことですが、この辺のりんごの木のしたにある芝生は庭園よりきれいに刈ってあります。とにかく、りんご農家のみんながまじめにやっていますよ。

Apples are serious work, but the results are truly wonderful. Aomori apples are really delicious.
僕はりんごの生産を遠くからしか見ていませんが、間違いなく手間がかかる農業のようです。皆さんは一生懸命頑張っていますが、その結果は一つ一つのりんごに見ることができます。とてもとても美味しいです。
