Life in Inakadate・田舎館での暮らし

Last week was another big event in the Inakadate annual calendar. Last Saturday and Sunday was the Harvest Appreciation Festival and Cyclamen Fair. The parking lot around the village hall and community center was filled with tents each tent was contained a group of people offering some service or selling some product.
先週は田舎館村の年間行事の大きいイベントの一つです。先週の土曜日、日曜日は村の収穫感謝祭とシクラメン市が開催されました。村役場と公民館の周りの駐車場にはいっぱいテントが建てられていて、そして各テントはいろんな物を提供しています。

There was a little of everything, handicrafts, ready to eat food, fresh vegetables, blood pressure checks, eyeglasses salesmen, mochi, rubber boots, and winter coats. And then the main attraction of the day was the cyclamen sale. It wasn't too long ago that I didn't even know what a cyclamen was, but now I live in a village where this flower is raised and celebrated in an annual festival. They floor of the village gymnasium was filled with red, pink and violet cyclamens for this event. It was quite a sight to see.

手芸と食べ物、新鮮な野菜と簡単な健康診断、眼鏡屋さんと餅売り、ゴム長靴と冬のコート、さまざまな物があります。しかし、メインはシクラメン市です。ちょっと前までに、僕は「シクラメン」というのは何なのか分からなかったですが、今は祭りを開くほどこの花がたくさん育てられている村に住んでいます。村の体育館の床が花いっぱいでした。赤、ピンクと紫が広く展示していて見事でした。

I have participated in the festival as well, putting forth an International Exchange Corner with some simple displays and a quiz about the United States. Happily quite a few people have stopped by and taken the quiz and even more happily, many people seem to have known the answers. Many of the children that I teach at the elementary schools in particular have stopped by to say 'hello.'
僕も祭りに参加して、簡単な展示とアメリカについてのクイズのある「小さい国際交流コーナー」を出しました。幸いに、数多くの人が立ち寄って、クイズを受けてみました。そして、それ以上に嬉しいことは、答えが分かっている人が比較的多かったです。小学校とかで教えている子供たちも多く「ハロー」と言いに来ました。
